Medical cannabis registrations underway, dispensaries to open in fall | Health

Registration for medical cannabis use is ongoing in West Virginia, and dispensaries selling the products could be open for business by this fall, according to Jason Frame, director of the state medical cannabis program.

Those who qualify for the medical marijuana program — which is reserved for certain medical conditions and ailments — may register by Sept. 30 for a two-year certification card. Those who register after Sept. 30 will be eligible for a one-year card.

Applications may be filed online through the Department of Health and Human Resources at http://medcanwv.org. On Monday, the department hosted in-person signups at the Kanawha-Charleston Health Department.

“There are some people who couldn’t get it done, whatever the cause, so they can come here and have an equal opportunity,” Frame said.

Why Hexo, Canopy Growth, and Aurora Cannabis Investors Are Scared

What happened

“Congress to vote on marijuana, psychedelics and CBD this week,” declared marijuana news hub Marijuana Moment yesterday evening — but the reaction among marijuana investors wasn’t at all what you’d expect.

As early as today, according to the report, the House of Representatives could begin voting on legislation to remove cannabis from the list of Schedule I substances forbidden for sale, use, or possession by federal law. And yet, in 1:05 p.m. EDT trading Tuesday, shares of Hexo (NYSE:HEXO) are down 4.6% while Canopy Growth (NASDAQ:CGC) and Aurora Cannabis (NASDAQ:ACB) have plummeted 6.8% apiece.

So what

So what, precisely, is it that marijuana investors are scared of? Three possibilities spring to mind.

First and foremost, although the legislation introduced in the House today aims to broadly legalize marijuana, it lacks some provisions that marijuana legalization activists have advocated, including a ban on denying renters

The Georgia Access to Medical Cannabis Commission voted unanimously to award medical marijuana licenses to six companies at the Walker County Civic Center on Saturday, July 24, 2021. MARK NIESSE / MARK.NIESSE@AJC.COM

Companies will have one year to begin operations after contracts are signed following potential protests from losing bidders, providing for patients suffering from conditions including seizures, terminal cancers and Parkinson’s disease.

Two companies won licenses to cultivate medical marijuana oil on 100,000 square feet of indoor growing space: Trulieve GA Inc., an affiliate of Florida-based Trulieve Cannabis Corp., and Botanical Sciences LLC, a business located in Glennville in South Georgia.

Four companies will be licensed to operate smaller production facilities with 50,000 square feet of growing room: FFD GA Holdings, TheraTrue Georgia LLC, Natures GA LLC and Treevana Remedy Inc.

Cannabis chemical delta-8 gains fans, scrutiny

NEW YORK >> A chemical cousin of pot’s main intoxicating ingredient has rocketed to popularity over the last year, and the cannabis industry and state governments are scrambling to reckon with it amid debate over whether it’s legal.

The chemical, called delta-8 THC, is billed as producing a milder high than the better known delta-9 THC, and delta-8 is often marketed as being legal even where marijuana is not. That argument stems from the fact that most delta-8 is synthesized from CBD, a popular non-intoxicating chemical that’s prevalent in hemp, a form of cannabis that Congress legalized in 2018.

Delta-8′s rise is “a phenomenon that has taken the industry quite by storm,” says John Kagia of cannabis industry analysis firm New Frontier Data, and it offers “fascinating insight into some of the growth and growing pains.”

There are no hard-and-fast statistics on sales of delta-8, which is available in vapes,

Could Heavy Marijuana Use Be Driving Rise in Schizophrenia Cases? | Health News

By Robert Preidt and Ernie Mundell, HealthDay Reporter

(HealthDay)

TUESDAY, July 27, 2021 (HealthDay News) — There’s been a sharp rise in schizophrenia cases linked with marijuana use since the mid-1990s, a new Danish study finds.

Prior research has suggested that marijuana — particularly very heavy use — is associated with an increased risk of schizophrenia. Although strict cause-and-effect can’t be proven by the new study, many experts believe that heavy pot use might work in conjunction with other risk factors to help trigger schizophrenia in certain individuals.

In the new study, researchers found that the percentage of schizophrenia diagnoses in Denmark associated with “cannabis use disorder” rose from 2% in 1995 to about 4% in 2000, and has climbed further to 8% since 2010, CNN reported.

According to the researchers, cannabis use disorder is usually defined as a problematic use of the drug, where users develop a tolerance to

Billionaire Charles Koch On Why Cannabis Should Be Legal

The devout libertarian known for spending a fortune on political causes is now actively funding efforts to end federal marijuana prohibition. Here’s why pro-pot advocates in both parties are high on his support.

Depending on whom you ask, Charles Koch is a titan of industry, dark money political bogeyman or the Marcus Aurelius of the libertarian movement. But soon Koch might be known as the billionaire who persuaded Republican and Democratic holdouts to legalize cannabis at the federal level.

And it’s not because he’s a pothead.

The only time the 85-year-old CEO of Koch Industries has consumed marijuana, he says, was by accident in the 1980s. He was helicopter skiing in British Columbia, and après-ski, he and his friends enjoyed a few gin and tonics at dinner. For dessert, the chef brought out a plate of brownies. Koch ate one and after a while felt a little

Many international locations around the world and now some states within the United States have chosen to allow the use of medical marijuana for those that may discover aid from its effects. In a single finding, researchers determined that medical marijuana use within the states of Colorado, Montana and Michigan rose dramatically in 2009 when the federal government introduced that it was making medical marijuana prosecutions a low priority. Doctors face new rules for smokable medical marijuana

New rules laying out the do’s and don’ts physicians must follow when certifying patients to smoke medical marijuana took effect last week, but it’s not clear that doctors or patients are fully aware of them.

Patients certified or recertified to smoke medical marijuana must sign a new standardized consent form as of last Tuesday. That form for the first time includes information about the dangers of smoking near oxygen tanks and advises patients to check their marijuana supplies for mold contaminants.

Also, physicians must adhere to newly adopted practice standards that for the first time spell out what the doctors must do to certify patients and what information needs to be included in patients’ medical records.

The state Office of Medical Marijuana Use, however, does not have on its website the new standardized consent form

Moreover, statewide medical groups have not advertised to their members that

Delivery Sweetening The Pot For Recreational Cannabis Businesses

Americans can have just about anything delivered to their front doors, whether it’s a pizza or a bag of groceries, or a shiny new SUV. But it has long been taboo – under the law, at least – to deliver recreational cannabis. People have been getting their weed delivered through a massive black market for years, but outside of the safe haven of California, marijuana users can’t legally order a bag of pot to be dropped off at their homes.

Until now, that is. Times are changing for the cannabis industry. In California, the proverbial frontier in the battle for recreational cannabis legalization, not only is the drug fully legal but cannabis delivery services were declared essential businesses by Gov. Gavin Newsom at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Now companies in Massachusetts and Colorado are at the forefront of the proliferation of recreational weed delivery services across the United
